As the director of your next motion project, you have to focus on telling a great story, shooting great visuals, and recording high-quality audio. It’s a lot of hats to wear, but not impossible to pull off. In the second installment of this DSLR audio Tech Tip, photographer and director Corey Rich takes a deeper look at some of the more advance audio-recording devices and techniques that you can use to make your next video sound great. Rich discusses how to set up remote shotgun mics and lav mics on your subject, and record that audio directly to your camera, or to an external audio recorder. Bone up on these additional audio devices and make your next DSLR film look great, sound great and be a great story, too.

Exploring the Creative Process: Great Moments Make Great Pictures - Getting the Shot with Corey Rich

http://www.adorama.com
Woody Allen once said that 80 percent of life is showing up. Well, the same can probably be said of photography, and 80 percent of what makes a great picture is capturing a great moment. In this episode of Exploring the Creative Process, photographer and director Corey Rich affirms one of the most important laws in photography: moments are fleeting, but essential, and you not only have to be open to seeing great moments, but be able to quickly capture them, nailing a perfect exposure and a great composition. The takeaway is to never be lazy, get out of bed and go find those fleeting, essential, decisive moments and capture them before they pass you by.

Advanced Time Lapse Photography: Part 2 - Getting the Shot with Corey Rich

http://www.adorama.com
In part one of this Tech Tip, photographer and director Corey Rich walked us through the principles behind how to create multi-axis-controlled time-lapse. Now, he’s going to show us how to actually do it, with stunning results. The process begins by scouting a beautiful location—you’re looking for a landscape with a great composition, paying careful attention to the foreground as that’s going to be what creates a nice parallax effect. Corey provides his complete settings for a Kessler Second Shooter and Nikon D810, as well as his checklist for making sure that everything is correct before beginning. Once you depress that shutter and begin your time-lapse intervalometer, the trick is to sit back, not second guess yourself, and enjoy your position for the next few hours.

Improvised Lighting on a Mountain Face: Getting the Shot with Corey Rich

http://www.adorama.com
In January 2015, two world-class rock climbers achieved a first for their sport: a free ascent of the Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. The news of Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson’s ascent captivated a global audience, largely thanks to the stunning imagery that was being captured live from the side of the 3,000-foot monolith. Corey Rich was one of the photographers who spent 10 days living on the side of El Cap with his friends as he documented their historic ascent. In this Tech Tip, Rich discusses one of the biggest challenges he faced during the climb: shooting the climbers as they climbed by headlamp at night. Watch the video to see how Corey shot this difficult situation!

Listening to Your Subject: Getting the Shot with Corey Rich: Tech Tip: AdoramaTV

www.adorama.com
When you approach any shoot, whether it’s commercial or personal, a common tendency is to bring preconceived notions of what you want to shoot. Yet often the best ideas are both spontaneous and the result of listening to your subjects and hearing their own ideas for what would make great pictures.
In this Tech Tip, photographer and director Corey Rich, explores the creative process of working closely with the Jackson family of kayakers. To Rich, the Jacksons aren’t just world-class kayakers, but they are close friends with whom he has built a strong relationship over the years.
Rich explains the synergy he created with Eric Jackson, the patriarch, who had a really out-of-the-box idea for what would make a dynamic family portrait. It goes to show you that sometimes when you’re open-minded and listen to your subjects, great pictures can be made.
